Are Memtest86 and Memtest86+ best for checking memory

I've just built a new server, using a bunch of parts I had lying around. It's had a couple of spontaneous re-boots and a couple of lock-ups, which I suspect are memory related.

I've run both Memtest86 and Memtest86+, and they both came up clean.

Any thoughts on anything else I can try, before I start pulling and switching memory modules around.

Cheers.

You don't really have a choice at this point

remove everything from the system that doesn't absolutely have to be there (other cards in the system, additional drives you aren't currently using.. etc.. ..

Leave only one Stick of memory installed and test,

Swap memory modules and retest..

Could be a bad/weak power supply, or any number of other problems causing your issue.

and yes memtest86+ rocks for testing memory.. take a long time to go through all the passes but it does a thorough job.

Check for heat problems

9/10 times these symptoms seem to be caused by too much heat. This is just my experience. Other than that the previous poster's idea of removing all cards is a very good troubleshooting technique.

Also, I would make sure that your CPU and RAM is not being overclocked.

It's a dual Opteron 252 setup, with 2Gb. No overclocking. 520W power supply.

lm_sensors gives the CPU temps as 41 and 44, and what it calls the Ambient temp as 43. An internal temp probe inside the case shows about the same, 41.

Cheers.

is it a good power supply ? or is it a no-name generic supply ? a low end supply can cause those voltage problems I mentioned earlier..
