architectures

hello, I've never owned nor installed Linux on any AMD-powered systems yet so I'm curious about which architecture they fall under... I've read a bit via the LQ's search and some people say that it falls under the i586 category.

Can someone please confirm this for me? thanks

edit:

Oh, and does this apply to all AMD chips? or do K6/K7, Athlon, Barton, Palomino (and other AMD chips I may have not mentioned) fall under different categories?

Anything > K6 should work with i686 compatible binaries (as well as i586, i486, i386).

thanks jtshaw

I did some searching around for a while and found this page. Could be useful to some others like me.
