Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Arch64 sound problems

I installed Arch64 a couple of days ago and haven't gotten the sound working yet. I followed the alsa troubleshooting guide but got stuck on step 4. The confusing thing is that the correct (I think) modules are loaded, and alsaconf correctly detects my card, but when I cat /proc/asound/cards it has no soundcards listed.

Some hardware information: It's an nForce motherboard with onboard AC97 sound. The relevant lspci line is
00:04.0 Multimedia audio controller: nVidia Corporation CK804 AC'97 Audio Controller (rev a2)
and the module that gets loaded is snd_intel8x0.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
