AR5B93 atheros 802.11n 2x2 slow throughput

Asus AC56U 802.11ac in "n" mode over 2.4 and 5GHZ 2x2 channels....

my linux mint laptop:
atheros AR5B93 802.11n 2x2 wifi card
8GM RAM
Quad core i7
average throughput over wifi to USB2 connected to router = 8MBps

my windows laptop
intel centrino 6200AGN 802.11n wifi card
2GM RAM
Centrino (old) CPU
average throughput over wifi to USB2 connected to router = 15MBps

Can someone advice what I can do on the linux box which is more powerful (newer hardware) to increase the 8MBps ... clearly the router and usb drive are not the issue as throughput tops out at around 150Mbps which is roughly half the 300Mpbs uplink (theoretical). The windows machine is A-okay, not so linux.

I am using standard Mint Petra 16 install and kernel/drivers etc. The ATH9K driver is being used.
