Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Anyone recommend a USB to RS232 adaptor?

Hi all

I'm pretty new to Linux (and v new to this forum), so any help gratefully recieved.
I've inherited a Redhat PC and have succesfully programmed it to record data from two separate devices via its two serial ports.
I need to make this system mobile and can get hold of a laptop running ubuntu 5.10. There are no serial ports on laptop, but there are 4 usb ports. I'm assuming I can go down the road of using two usb to RS232 adaptors on this system.
So basically I'm asking if this is likely to be possible or am I barking up wrong tree? If it is possible, can anyone recommend particular USB to RS232 adaptor..will I need special drivers etc....?
Once again, thanks for any help forthcoming....and apologies if this posting is in wrong forum.....

Welcome to LQ!

Probably more responses in Hardware, I'll move there after I respond.

In the kernel you can see a list of Serial (of the RS232 type) to USB converters (I read it that way because I'm attaching serial into a USB port).

Here's the path to look at what's supported:
Device Drivers ===> USB Devices ====> USB Serial Converter Support, from there you have a slew of drivers. From the size of that list I'd guess you could have a fairly high rate of success in just picking one up and trying it and it working (assuming you have a newish kernel, that's from a 2.6.15 kernel).

HTH

Cool

Thanks for reply.

I don't have access to to the laptop yet, but will check with vendor what kernel it supplied with.
I have no doubt I'll be back with more questions soon, but still be grateful of any particular recomendations or probs I'm likely to encounter....
