Red face Any USB device hangs up the system

Hi,
I have a problem with my RH8 Linux USB port. It used to work well earlier but I tried the following stuff(based on what i found on a website) to get my Palm connect to it via USB.

$modprobe usb-uhci
$modprobe usb-ohci
$modprobe usbserial
$modprobe visor
$mknod /dev/ttyUSB0 c 188 1
$mknod /dev/ttyUSB1 c 188 1

After this, whenever I try to connect anything to my USB, the system just hangs up.

If I do a "lsmod" on my sys now, usb related stuffs shown are
usb-uhci
usbcore

Is there anything I can do to get my usb port working - other than another full install

Thanks in advance
CF

( I just bought a Creative Nomad MuVo and I badly need the USB again
