any hope for sata on a slackware 9.0 distro?
 

i have a maxtor sata drive, maxtor eide drive, asus a7n8x delux mobo, and slackware 9.0 with the 2.4.20 kernel which is installed on the eide, somebody give me some good news! (and some help 4 a newbie)

Wouldn't you just have to upgrade to the 2.6.x kernel?

I don't have much experience with SATA drives, but I was under the impression that the newer kernels supported it.

how would i go about doing that? also would that prevent anything else from working that worked under the 2.4.20 kernel?

Yea, you could use a 2.6 kernel. There are also libata patches for the 2.4 series kernels.... I have only one hard drive that is SATA and I installed right on to it so theres a way for anything if you really want it... ;) Since you have an IDE drive as well it's a simple matter of getting Slack on to it. I had to use a custom boot disk that had SATA built into the kernel for my ICH5 controller. This thread has all the info you need. No need to write it all out. I'll just give you the link.

Ekks.. Sorry... I loose track of threads too easy... Yea, You'll need to know your controller. Yea, thats one of them... Look what it says in my config about it tho.... :(

No help file for it either... Maybe it's got to do with the patch that I used.... Not sure. Theres like 20 of them for 2.4.25...... Not sure what they are all about... We are about a month away from 2.4.27 being released.... That is supposed to have SATA support built in. So you can either do some research on all those patches to find the right one, Pick a random patch and see if it works, wait on 2.4.27 or use a 2.6 kernel..... Bummer... I'm still trying to figure out why there are so many patches in there for 2.4.25. I would download the highest version number, patch it and then see what your config says. I'm so anal that I would probably download all those patches and keep making backups of my virgin kernel and use all the patches just to see whats up.... Good luck...
