Another usb modem problem

Hi, so I been searching for awhile now about getting a usb modem to work under Progeny Debian-- newton,
but all I've seen so far mostly pertains to the speedtouch modem (had this distro for sometime
and decided to give it another try).
I'm beginning to think I'm the only one with a regular modem. The modem works under linux-- used it with
suse7.2, however, I need to know how to set it up in debian (hopefully without having to compile the kernel).
I've checked to make sure that the acm is loaded--it is. Things are a tad different in debian than in suse.
So here are specs:
Modem-- usb actiontec 56k modem, with lucent chipset.
PC: Progeny Debian GNU/Linux--Newton
2.2.18 kernel, 10 GB harddisk-{/dev/hda1-swap133mb, /dev/hda2 root9.3gb}, intel p3 celeron-700MHz,
(connections are 7usb ports+1serial port for monitor), intel i810 graphics controller.
I'll try and input whatever other details I may have left out later. But help me if you can anyway.
I like this distro, I wouldn't change a thing, not even to do an upgrade. Everything else works fine,
except for the xvidtune; that's for another post.
Thanks in advance.
