another nvidia problem, no X at startup

Ok here is the deal,
I have just installed debian knoppix. I was using SuSE 7.3 until now in which my gforce 4 card ran like a dream. To be on the save side I saved my XF86config-4 file.
On my new debian system, I re-installed the nvidia drivers with the tar files. After setting the IGNORE_CC_MISMATCH env. variable, installation ran just fine. Then I edited my XF86config-4 file (the one that came with the debian system), and did a startx. However, this faild. Then I decided to use the XF86config files from my SuSE system and initially that worked. To be sure that everhithing worked properly, I rebooted to see what would happen. Unforttunatly, X did'nt startup after boot-up.
I turns out I have to do "insmod NVdriver" to get X working. Why isn't the nvidia kernel module not being loaded at boot time? Will I have to edit my modules.conf file manually?

Would appreciate any help ....

Ok, I got X started at boot-up at this moment. I simply edited my boot.local file so it would load the nvidia drivers.
But still, this isn't suppose to be like this.
