Have a look in /var/log/XFree86.0.log, if there is a line that says " Using config file: "/etc/X11/XF86Config-4" " then you need to change that one instead.

This works with my USB optical wheel mouse plugged in through a ps/2 adapter:

Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Mouse1"
Driver "mouse"
Option "Protocol" "IMPS/2"
Option "Device" "/dev/psaux"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
EndSection

Use the less command. less is a pager, which is a simple program that lets you read through a text file. To view the log file I mentioned, type this into a terminal:

cd /var/log/
less XFree86.0.log

Now you can use the up and down keys to read through it. Press q to exit.

If there is a line that says " Using config file: "/etc/X11/XF86Config-4" " then you need to change /etc/X11/XF86Config-4.

To do this, log in as root and edit the relevant bits of /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 with a text editor. (learn a bit about using vi to do this, it's a good editor - if a bit complicated).

Hope this helps, if not, ask again!
