another hdd=ide-scsi problem

I'm running a hdd install of Knoppix 3.3 and most things are cool ---- but I *sudddenly* needed to burn a cdrom and k3b couldn't find my burner. I appended my lilo.conf with the appropriate line (see below) but it doesn't work. This procedure has worked in the past with other distros but not this time

The relevant lilo line is -----
image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.4.24-xfs
label=Linux
initrd=/boot/initrd.gz
append="noapic hdd=ide-scsi"
read-only
# restricted
# alias=1

Now --- this worked ONCE ---- a couple of days ago I was messing around with kernel 2.6 (my first attempt to add a new kernel) and on a reboot (to my default kernel) I suddenly had a cd-rewriter. I burned a couple of cds and went away. Then ------ can you believe this? We had a f@8king power cut and on reboot, my burner was gone. I've tried *everything* (oh yeah???? not everything then )

I'm happy to compile a new kernel ----- I believe 2.6 doesn't need scsi emulation? I noticed on boot that my ATAPI gets reset after a timeout ----- scsi is mentioned. I'm just a bit stuck --- it seems easy with Knoppix and Lilo ----- but it ain't.
What do I do next???

hmmmm! perhaps I have a hardware fault??? The cd burner was recognised for a while but k3b froze while trying to burn a cd. I booted later, only to find that the burner had gone again. I suppose that my LG burner could be very ill??

I nipped out and bought a Philips CD-ReWriter and dragged my old LG out. The Philips has been recognised as hdd=ide-scsi in three successive boots. I might try and use it in a minute!! It's amazing, isn't it? I always prefer to blame the software and not the hardware and therefore waste hours and hours of time thinking that my it is my inability to set up config files that is to blame !! The LG has been fine until now --- I should have remembered that I bought it over three years ago. Hopefully, I won't need to post in this thread again ---- perhaps only to say that all is well.
P>S> it usually is my config editing that causes me headaches!!! This time I can blame LG.
