(Another) CDROM mounting preblem

Hello-

My system is: Compaq Armada M300 PIII 600 12Gig/196mb/dvd-cdrom/floppy running mandrake 9.2.
I am having a problem mounting a CD. When I installed initially, everything worked fine, though after some event (not sure when) I lost my ability to mount a CD (KDE and the terminal calls /mnt/cdrom/ a file and not a directory) The floppy still reads as a directory as well as the camera mount
I have no problem reading audio cd's in xine or playing dvd's in xine. I cannot however read data cd's (no browsing directory, installing with the mandrake installation tool etc)

I've tried removing to the file to replace the dir but then it says it's a directory and vice-versa.

here are the contents of my fstab file:

/dev/hda1 / ext3 noatime 1 1
none /dev/pts devpts mode=0620 0 0
/dev/hda6 /home ext3 noatime 1 2
none /mnt/cdrom supermount dev=/dev/hdc,fs=udf:iso9660,ro,--,iocharset=iso8859-1 0 0
none /mnt/floppy supermount dev=/dev/fd0,fs=ext2:vfat,--,codepage=850,iocharset=iso8859-1,sync 0 0
none /proc proc defaults 0 0
/dev/hda5 swap swap defaults 0 0
none /mnt/camera supermount dev=/dev/sda1,fs=ext2:vfat,--,kudzu,codepage=850,iocharset=iso8859-1 0 0

here are the contents of my mtab file

/dev/ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/part1 / ext3 rw,noatime 0 0
none /proc proc rw 0 0
none /proc/bus/usb usbfs rw 0 0
none /dev devfs rw 0 0
none /dev/pts devpts rw,mode=0620 0 0
/dev/ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/part6 /home ext3 rw,noatime 0 0
none /mnt/cdrom supermount ro,dev=/dev/hdc,fs=udf:iso9660,--,iocharset=iso8859-1 0 0
none /mnt/floppy supermount rw,sync,dev=/dev/fd0,fs=ext2:vfat,--,codepage=850,iocharset=iso8859-1 0 0
none /mnt/camera supermount rw,dev=/dev/sda1,fs=ext2:vfat,--,codepage=850,iocharset=iso8859-1 0 0

Sorry about my newbness, i supose Ihave to learn somewhere...
Thanks or the help!

If its true that /mnt/cdrom isn't a directory anymore then try this in a console window and post the results.
ls -l /mnt/*

If /mnt/cdrom is a file then delete it using the rm command and create a new directory using the mkdir command:

rm /mnt/cdrom
mkdir /mnt/cdrom

CD and DVD players access the device and do not use the /etc/fstab. Your /etc/fstab is for mounting data filesystems.

Okay-

Here are some results:

# ls -l /mnt/
total 0
drwxrwxrwx 0 root root 0 Mar 6 17:05 camera/
-r-xr-xr-x 1 root root 0 Dec 31 1969 cdrom*
drwxrwxrwx 0 root root 0 Mar 6 17:05 floppy/

when I try to rmdir I get this:

# rm cdrom
rm: remove regular empty file `cdrom'? y
rm: cannot remove `cdrom': Is a directory
[root@Zymurgy mnt]# rmdir cdrom
rmdir: `cdrom': Device or resource busy
[root@Zymurgy mnt]#

do I need to chmod the cdrom? maybe that has nothing to do at all with it.

thanks again
austin
