...and then there was silence

Hey guys

I’m pretty new at the whole Linux thing and I can’t seem to get the sound working in kde.
When I run alsaconf it finds the card and installs the driver flawlessly. When I startx as a user the sound works and continues to work until I startx as root. Then it never works again. I don’t even know where to begin.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

did you run "alsaconf" as root?

then "chmod 666 /dev/dsp*"
and
then "chmod 666 /dev/mixer*"
to change permissions for regular users
you can also then run "alsamixer" and adjust your volumes as needed, then run "alsactl store"
run the commands without the quotes

well, you are not really supposed to run a full X session as root, it can result in irreversible changes on your system and it makes it easier for people to compromise your system.

In the background behind x it says:

kmixectrl: ERROR: ALSA mixxer cannot be found. Please check that sound card is installed and driver is loaded

ALSA lib pcm_hw.c:594snd_pcm_hw_start) SND_PCM_IOCONTROL_START failed: Broken pipe

However that being said... the sound is currently working

thanks
