An error occurred opening /dev/audio (RedHat 9)

I have a old computer with an ASI sound card (Yamaha OPL YMF718-S)

RedHat 9 didn't pick it up, I tried sndconfig, it picked up something in ASI slot, so I picked ok with the default IO port, IRQ, DMA1 and DMA2

It gave me this error : An error occurred opening /dev/audio

Can someone help me? I had been at this for 3 weeks...

Did you ever figure out how to fix this? I am in the same boat. Yamaha OPL3-SA3
sndconfig runs but then when it tries to play test audio I get the /dev/audio error.
Sound Board:Unknown
RH 9 kernel 2.4.20-8

Tried it as root still no luck

I have two drivers listed ad1848 and ns558.

Any suggestions anyone for a green noobie

I got so messed up with the old sound card, I gave up awhile ago.

One thing you can try is Open sound, it's not free though.
