Amd64 + 9800xt

I want to completely switch over to Linux, but I don’t know how probable that will be. My main concerns are that I have a ATI Radeon 9800 XT, and an AMD Athlon 64 3500+. What problems can I expect from this, and if there will be a loss of performance from XP pro, what can I expect? I am a heavy gamer, UT2004, Doom 3, Call of Duty, Halo: Combat Evolved, to mention a few of the games I play a lot. I will be using Mandrake 10.0 AMD 64 version (it might have been 10.1, can’t quite remember).

What I really need to know is what drivers should I use for my video card, since I know ATIs and Linux do not play well together. Also, I have heard there are issues w/ AMD 64 processors, what can I expect from this?

Thanks in advance,

There will actually be a good gain in performance, as XP Pro is a 32 bit OS, but Mandrake 10.1 has a 64 bit edition, which takes advantage of the 64bit CPU. You will need 64bit video drivers, and I think ATI's 64bit drivers are still in the works right now. But I'm not 100% sure about that.

ok, thanx, i will be fine running the 32 bit drivers for now (or whenever I get around to installing it), until the 64 bit drivers are released.

but, i guess here are still my main questions:

1. Installing Games - how do I do it (i am a total linux noob - have had maybe a total of 2 hours w/ mandrake 9.2), what do i need to know, problems with certain games, will the ati drivers give me any problems, because i know ati and linux do not play well together

what i do know is that you dont have click-thru installs, do you need to run a command from the shell to initiate the setup file, and if so what is the command, well i guess i will stop blabbering since i really do not know how to install software on linux. like i said, basically zip experience with it.

2. installing drivers - i know that you have to download the binaries, they are not in .exe format, how to i run these?

3. LANs - how easy/hard is it to connect to other Windows XP machines
4. Modems - i have heard that there are a lot of compatibility issues with linux and dialup modems, i have an Encore NetoDragon (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...180-003&depa=1)

actually, is there any place on the web where i could check my hardware for compatibility with linux?

To check your hardware compatibility, theres a few sites that do it, theres the HCL here on linuxquestions.org, Mandrakes supported hardware list - http://www.mandrakelinux.com/en/hardware.php3 and the linux hardware compatibility list - http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/doc...are-HOWTO.html

These lists are probably not complete and may not include your particular hardware but it always pays to google your hardware if its not on the lists.

The ATI drivers use an RPM package which you can install with the rpm utility once you have installed mandrake. For more info on installing them, have a search of these forums, I am sure theres many questions and answers about them and failing that, use google.

WRT the games, doom 3 has a linux install package that IMHO works better then the windows version and ut2004 apparently has linux support on the original cds (http://www.linuxelectrons.com/article.php/20040419). I would doubt that halo would have native linux support (MS's top XBox game... need I say more) and I had trouble trying to installing it with wine and cedega.
For any other games, just google them to see if they have linux support, if not get either transgaming cedega (www.transgaming.com) or wine (www.wine.org). Cedega costs money to get but has better support for direct x games and wine is free and runs openGL games quite well but can choke on games that use directx.

HTH, and don't forget that google is your best friend
If theres any problems also don't hesitate to post on the forums again, it can be very very helpful.

thanks man, thats very helpful.

i think just for the rare occasion when i would need windows, im going to have a 4GB partition for windows, with the remaining 70GB for mandrake. (i have an 80GB sata, but, lol, industry standard is 1,000,000,000 bytes (is that right? may have left off a set of zeros) not an actual gigabyte, never really understood why they do that, i guess its just another way to rip us off.)

should i install one of the OS's first, or does it matter?

p.s. dont i know you from xoxideforums, emu?

edit: i can live without halo, i am mostly a UT2004/Call of Duty player now

especially if it means another move away from microshaft

edit2: i didnt know french wine could run games on linux :P
i can find the site tho dont worry

another thing i thought of, are there any utilities you guys think i should get for mandrake 10.1?

i am getting WINE right now, since it is only 13MB not too bad on a dial-up, i will probably pay for cedega if i cant run anything more than Halo.
i have a friend with broadband for the bigger files.

also is there any utility in linux where i would not have to have the fricking cd in the drive everytime i start the game up, or am i still going to have to use no-cd cracks? i would have thought by now they would find a way to automate no-cd cracks, because from what i have heard from some people they are not too very difficult to make

i cant think of anything else at the moment, but what are some utilities you find extremely useful/fun/etc?

i prefer free, but it its really useful im willing to pay for it.

I usually use no-cd cracks for games under wine and cedega because I hate using cds and needing to swap them (and sometimes it just don't plain old work with swapping ). However iirc cedega can handle swapping cds ok but I might be wrong.

Sorry about forgetting a link for wine (www.winehq.com) but mandrake should have it on the cds (#6 iirc in the power pack) but I dont have the isos for it (just a huge ftp mirror ).

I have never been or heard of xoxideforums before :P.

Anyhow, Ill write more later, got to go.

Hi,

WRT installing the games in linux, the native ports usually have a *.run or a *.bin file that can be run from the command line or the run box in kde. You may need to make it executable (chmod +x filename or just use the properties box in konqueror ) and you will probably need to be root to install.

Whenever I reinstall linux, theres always a few programs that I always install, not matter what. They are:

- Amsn ( http://amsn.sourceforge.net/ ) - msn chat program. You will need to install the tcl/tk packages for mandrake to run it.

- GyacheEnhanced ( http://phpaint.sourceforge.net/pyvoicechat/ ) - Pretty much fully featured yahoo chat client. A heck of a lot better then the official yahoo linux client. Requires the python package plus a few others. Make sure you read the installation help because it does require a few packages to be installed.

-libdvdcss ( http://developers.videolan.org/libdvdcss/index.html ) - Needed to play css-encryted dvds in linux because there is no official decrypter / player. Please note though that using libdvdcss may be not exactly legal in your particular part of the world (depending on where you are). If you care about this then you may want to check up and maybe not use it.

- www.google.com - chances are, if you are having a problem, someone has already had it before so it never hurts to use google

Theres probably a few more that I install all the time but most if not all should be on your mandrake cds. Just have a look through there because there is many, many programs just on the basic mandrake cds.

Install windows first because it doesnt always play friendly with other operating systems being installed when it gets installed. And you may want to leave a windows partition thats a tad larger then 4gb for windows. I would recommend around 8-10gb so that you have enough space to install games that you just cant live without and dont work in linux (eg afaik all the need for speed series doesnt work in linux, that may have changed but...)

Well, thats all I can think of atm, if you need any more help or have any problems just post to linuxquestions whether it be in this thread or a new one. And dont forget that www.google.com is your best friend

Oh, why I think about it, when you install mandrake, if you are not getting any sound, open a console and type in: alsamixer and turn up the volumes to a reasonable amount (I find around 94% is good without distortion).
