AMD vs Intel

Hello,
First of all I am sorry that this is really not a linux post, but everyone here seems to know their way around a computer. I was thinking of building my own computer and was stuck on which route to take, AMD or Pentium. The AMD seems to be the cheaper way to go with the same speed as a Pentium, but I was wondering if anyone could tell me the differences if, I will see any just at my home. Right now I am using an Intel Celeron and it seems fine. So thanks to anyone who responds.

It depends is the answer...

In short if you are budget minded AND you are looking for a lower end computer AMD XP 2200 or lower, then you will get a MUCH better $$/CPU power ratio w/ AMD... If you are looking to build something a little more powerful, and have more money, the P4s are a better deal (as opposed to Opterons). This seems to be generally accepted--but I guarantee that someone will contradict this.

The other difference is the heat that you deal with... AMD chips run hotter--thus they require noisier or more complex cooling schemes...

my two cents

For me it came down to noise. With an AMD, I'm basically wearing ear muffs, b/c it's so loud in my computer room, because of the heatsink/fan that I have/had on my processor. When I decided to go with a new comp, I went all P4, because it's quieter, and the difference in price of the MHz I'm doing really wasn't all that big.
