AMD socket A, socket 754


Well I know this question doesn't have much to do with linux but giving that I'm planing to install linux on it I though you guys can help me out. What is the difference between the socket A and the socket 754 from AMD??? Are they compatible?? I bought a pcchips k7 motherboard and it is compatible with any AMD cpu that have a socket A, I want to buy a new cpu but I don't if I can buy one with a socket 754. Can I???

Socket A = 32-bit (Athlon XP series and earlier)

Socket 754 = 64-bit (“older” Athlon 64 series)

Also:
Socket 939 = 64-bit (“newer” Athlon 64 series)
