AMD Ryzen 5 4500 is NOT an i386 device so . . .

I built a brand new system using Ryzen 5 processor. I used the drives from my old machine because the old MOBO died and I wanted to keep the data on the drive. I also added new drives to the new system. All this works very nicely. Then I attempted to upgrade my Ubuntu 18.04 to the newest 20.04.x and I got an error telling me that the Ubuntu 18.04 is as far as I can go with my "i386" system. Why does this installer think I have an "i386" system?

TIA

Yup, you installed that system as a 32-bit system, ie i386. So accurate error, after 18.04 isn't available in 32-bit.

While it's TECHNICALLY possible to convert a 32-bit install to a 64-bit install, it's FAR easier to back up anything important and reinstall as 64-bit.

Yep, you have a 32bit system. 20.04 and 22.04 (latest) are 64bit systems only. Agree with above. Backup your data, and install the latest LTS (22.04), restore data and you are good to go.

For example my 20.04 64bit system says:
Code:
$ uname -a
Linux home-gen 5.4.0-125-generic #141-Ubuntu SMP Wed Aug 10 13:42:03 UTC 2022 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
