Question Amd?

I am pretty new to Linux, and am considering upgrading my machine from an Intel PIII Coppermine to an AMD setup, possibly an XP 2400. Are there any compatability issues with Linux and AMD procs that I should know about before I make the switch? I have been running Red Hat 9 for about a month, and have had tremendous performance boosts over Win2k on an 800 mhz proc. Any insights about Linux and AMD would be much appreciated.

I know of no issues with AMD processors. I've used nothing but AMDs for several years and haven't run into any problems.

You shouldn't have any problems. There are custom Athlon and Duron kernels out there, but if you are just running a stock install, you shouldn't have a problem running an AMD processor. I've got 3 Linux boxes running on AMD processors and 2 pentium machines and I can't tell a difference performance-wise. Obviously, the only difficulty you should have is whether or not your machine can physically accept an AMD processor (SocketA) or is some funky form-factor like a slot processor type.

That shouldn't be a concern...I'll be upgrading my mobo and ram at the same time. Thanks for the info.
