AMD 2200 shows as 1300 under mandrake 9.1

Hi

I recently setup my brothers machine with mandrake 9.1 and gkrellm pointed out that mandrake had seen the cpu as 1.3ghz ( gkrellm read the data from /proc/cpuinfo)

If anyone as encountered this before and knows how to get the true speed detected or should i just whack him and tell him to go find more important things to do

Thanks for any help

its ok, amd's and intel's naming conventions are different for each chip. In core mhZ, yeah, you have a 1.3 gHz chip. BUT! (according to call for help, techtv) it would PERFORM the same as a intel 2.2 (2200) chip under the same circumstances. It's very odd

for example, i have an AMD athlon xp 2400+. the speed shows as 1999mHz. Get the picture? nothing to worry about

Wanna know something....
what AMD wrote on the box or the info about the frequency of the processor isn't right,
ok it's like this....AMD claimed that the 2200 MHZ is the maximum speed reached by the processor (maybe by overclocking it), it's not the real speed, the freqeuency is maybe around 1300 to 1800.
here's the quick tip
AMD ATHLON XP 2400 Mhz = 1900 - 2000 Mhz/Max 2400
2300 Mhz = 1800 - 1900 Mhz/Max 2300
and so on

so if u want to feel athlon at its best performance....Overclock it

That's not the case at all! AMD chips are given a PR (Pentium Rating) so they are comparable to Intel's chips. Though a 2400XP runs at 1.999GHz, it does as many calculations per second as an Intel running at 2.4GHz. The frequency rating (whether it be in MHz or GHz) simply indicates how many clock cycles occur in a second. Though the AMD chips have fewer clock cycles per second, they perform 9 calculations per clock cycle while P4s only do 6.

However, a 2200 should be showing as somewhere in the region of 1.7/1.8GHz, not 1.3!

I'm sorry... AMD is not very fast? Not sure what you're on about here. I have a P4 2.0GHz here at work and an Athlon XP2000+ at home (which runs at 1.6667GHz) and my home PC is the quicker by far! If I overclocked my home PC I'm not sure I'd be able to come to work, the lack of power would depress me.

well, no matter what the problem is, all processor is good, maybe i'm wrong and maybe i'm right....who knows, i'm also using AMD athlon XP 2400 and Intel Pentium IV 2400, Kingston Memory PC 2700 each 512, VGA GeForce FX5200 for my AMD and MX440 for Intel...before i overclocked the AMD....i've benchmark it...and.....well, Intel run faster, very fast compare to AMD, well...so, in my opinion it doesn't matter who's the faster, it's about the hardware you choose, in this case...maybe the motherboard or the FSB and stuff.....well, one thing for sure...no matter what component u choose....LINUX is the answer right

So what people are saying is that when I see my athlon XP 2200+ identified by Redhat9 as an Athlon XP 1500 running at 1349.871 Mhz. this is normal?

check the fsb speed in your bios settings, if it says 100 change it to 133 mhz.
An athlon 2200 should run at 1800 mhz

O sh**! I've been running with almost 1/3 less CPU for almost a year now. heh. What a rube I am!

Thanks for the tip. It's correctly ID'ed by the system now.
