AMD 1GHz Athlon and heat
so i ended up replacing a compaq 5000 mobo with an MSI one that works just fine. my only question is this:
when i removed the proc from the old to the new, the heat sink had to come off. that was held in place by a piece of thermal tape that kinda seperated. upon reinstallation, everything lined up just the same.
i've only run the system for a little bit (no more than an hour at a time tops), and the hottest i've seen the proc get is 55C. do i absolutely need to replace the tape if it doesn't seem to be overheating? outside of good practice, is it a neccessity?
if so, should i stick with tape, or go with a compound? i have access to a Dynex Silver compound here at work.
thx
system:
AMD 1000 Athlon
MSI Mobo
256mb SDRAM
Mandrake 9.2
2.4 kernel for now
