Amarok not seeing iPod
I've got my iPod to automatically mount when I attach it by adding a line to /etc/fstab. But when I click on the media device tab in Amarok, there is nothing. What do I need to do to be able to use Amarok with my iPod.

After mounting your iPod, open Amarok and go to settings (that is, unless Amarok asks if you would like to use the device as iPod or something -- for some Amarok versions this works), there's a tab for devices; select your device there and set it to be used as an Apple iPod. After this save&close settings window, go to the Media devices tab and click the Connect button (make sure there's the right device chosen in the drop-list, I recall there is such thing). After this don't start joying, since if you'd like this to be permanent, click the other button (on the same row as the connect button, but to the right) which opens a window for altering the pre/post-connect commands; add these:

Pre-connect: mount %d
Post-connect: umount %d

(if %d points to the device; it reads in the window) After this save&close that window, and your Pod should work with Amarok more painlessly (if it's not opened in Amarok automatically, you should at least be able to just click the Connect button to open it in Amarok and Disconnect to close and umount it; if you don't take these steps clicking Connect won't do anything unless you go through Settings every time).

I know it's a bit frustrating, but once you do the above procedure one time in the correct order, the device (but only that device; if you have two iPods, mounted at different places, you need to do this for both of them separately) is handled much more easily in the future.

Thanks b0uncer. When I go to setting the only tabs I have is general, appearance, playback, OSD, engine, collection and strobler. No devices.

What version are you using? I have 1.2.3 witch comes with Debian 3.1.

Any ideas?

I installed version 1.4 and have the device tabs now. But the device is being mounted as "Can View Contact", but when I change that to "Can View and Modify content" it tells me "Changing the attributes of files is not supported with protocol devices." What do I do?

try and get it to work with gtkpod, ive never used this program and i dont know its capabilities, but i imagine you would have more luck with it.
sorry thats all the help i can offer

edit: what does your entry in /etc/fstab look like, maybe you dont have permission to write to it?

Hey. For some reason it started working after fiddling in fstab. Didn't change anything.
