Am I having modem problems or PCI problems??
 

I'm brand new to Linux (just installed Red Hat 9 yesterday, alongside XP Pro) and eager to get my hands dirty. The transition from Windows has been peaceful so far, except for issues with my modem.

My modem is a U.S. Robotics 56k Voice Win 1806. After contacting U.S. Robotics, I found out that it is a generic OEM not manufactured by USR. Anyway, when I run the Internet Config Wizard, it can't see my modem. I ran wvdialconf and every port that it tests says "Device or Resource busy". I realize (from reading other posts) that I may just have a Winmodem and need to get an external serial to do the job.

However, my modem and my sound card (Creative Audio PCI ES 1371) are both PCI and Red Hat can't see either of them. When I run lspci from a terminal, I get "command not found". Am I having hardware compatibility problems, or is this a PCI problem?????????????

If anyone out there wouldn't mind enlightening a newbie, I'd be grateful. Feel free to reply and speak to me as if I were a complete idiot, because like I said, I'm new at this.

Are you running lspci or scanpci as root?

In any case, cheeck http://linux.maruhn.com/sec/pciutils.html to get these utilities. On my (debian) box they are in /sbin - you might want to try /sbin/lspci -vvv on your machine (or /bin/lspci -vvv or /usr/sbin or...), depending on what is in your path. When it comes to the sound card, RedHat installer usually picks them up, however, (I am not an expert on sound cards and don't care for them too much), a kernel recompile or a modprobe <the-right-module> might do the trick...
