Try getting into BIOS and disabling the onboard sound. Sometimes if a system has multiple sound devices it can get confused.

If no ALSA modules are being loaded, you can manually load them via the modprobe command

Doh!. It is emu10k1. when I type that, it doesn't return a error messgae. However still no sound, and alsaconf still can't find it.

alsaconf doesn't work for alot of sound hardware. You may end up having to set it up manually. I had to in my case. Refer to alsa project's homepage for details on how to.

Since you didn't get an error message when you ran modprobe for it, try checking the levels with alsamixer right after. Since it didn't give any message when you modprobed, that is generally a sign that it loaded them ok. It might have just been a matter of unmuting.

And I ran dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 and set the options but it gives an error message. i know nothing about it so i will wait until my dad get shome and ask him, since it may be a while untill i get a new one since i am not really looking at them ans I am supposed to. any suggestions?
