anybody have any ideas of what it means about kernel sources?
i think that might be the key to this but i have no idea what to do about it

if you know what distro it is you're using, go to their website or open up some documentation and figure out how to install the source for the kernel you're using. you can find out the version of the kernel by typing 'uname -r' at the prompt. you should be able to get the kernel source from www.kernel.org if you know what version you're running.
i think that oughta do it....
keep it real hommies...

I'm still not having luck

I've installed ALSA, I think correctly, but still no luck, using Red Hat 8.0 sound card detection it detects the sound card, but no sound. If I try and open "sound volume" I get a message about not being able to open audio device, check permissions or make sure sound is compiled into kernel, I've checked permissions (ls -l /dev/mixer*) and get crw------- on both mixer and mixer1. Do I need to compile and how?
