Alsa Problem!
I am running gentoo-dev-sources kernel 2.6.7-r11 when i try using alsa i keep getting message saying it can't find dsp or device doesn't exist, i have tried so many things and the device does exist, like it give me /dev/dsp doesn't exist but i browse there and its there, I have been trying for so long to fix it, also when i run amixer or alsmixer they say no mixer elms found, i have configured all the files, followed the gentoo alsa install guide, no luck, and the alsa driver is built into my kernel, oss works, but i get skipping, or hangs, like it will be playing and then i'll hear some static and it will play the same part again, and when using mplayer the video and audio don't match and i also get the problem with the sound, i use xmms for audio and mplayer for video

PS-my card is built in to the mobo, its uses the driver via82xx

Sounds like there's alot of problems with alsa and the 2.6.7 kernel. Please post the output of "lsmod" and what your /etc/modules.conf file has in it.

The main reason I wanted to see the output of lsmod and your /etc/modules.conf files is to make sure that your "soundcore" module was loading and also to see if there weren't some of the old OSS modules loading. If some of the old OSS modules are loading they will attach to the soundcard and not allow alsa to work. You do however want the alsa oss emulation modules to load. You know, the ones that are like "snd_pcm_oss" and such. All the alsa modules start with "snd" if you have any modules pertaining to sound loading that don't start with "snd" except for "soundcore" that's probably your problem. Although, you mentioned that sometimes there was intermitent sound, and I don't know what to think of that, as usually it either works all the time or just doesn't. I know that at least 2 or 3 other people on the list are complaining about the same problem with alsa and the 2.6.7 kernel.
