ALSA on Debian sid with Fortissimo II (cs46xx) problem(s?)

Hi, i'm a newbie in the Linux world. I tried mandrake, it was really esay to use but really... heavy, slow, and it bugs! So I turned to Debian.
With help of grimms from forum.rue-montgallet.com I learnt to configure my Debian. So all works perfectly... except my soundcard. I try to install it since 1 week and it does'nt works!
So, if you can help the newbie that I am...

So,
I made first a debian install. I set up during the installation process: ALSA cs46xx
So, when the system boots, it says that it found a Fortissimo II Digitale Edition v.x with irq:... cool! So I launch sndconfig... it finds the hardware, but says that it cannot play sound on sound device, and ask me to choose my chipset in the list. I pick cs46xx, and it says again that it cannot play sound...

Well, I compiled a new 2.4.22 kernel and I upgrade to Sid.
I tried apt-get install alsa-source etc: nothing works, it just shows at startup: ALSAcs46ss but the mixer doesn't work etc...

So i installed the driver as shown in

alsa-project.org/alsa-doc/doc-php/template.php?company=Hercules&card=Game+Fortissimo+II&chip=CS4624&module=cs46xx

I heard a "clic" on the speakers... the mixer was ok and alsamix said that it had found a fortissimo II. At boot , i can see Alsa: cs46xx .
I ran sndconfig... and it said that the module cs46xx.o wasn't loaded.
I tried lsmod, and I saw that cs46xx was loaded...
But no sound, nothing, it really does'nt want to work. I spent much hours on it. I tried to install il under Gnome: it did'nt worked, and when i tried to play a file, i get a wonderful kernel panic (all stopped, i only get the 2 LED's from the kboard blinking...)

So if you can help me...

Excuse my very bad english, I'm French ;)

The alsa installation is unfortunately quite complicated.

You should read the Debian alsa installation HOWTO to get it done right.

Thanks, i'll read it tomorrow; I spent last nights on it, so i need to sleep now
Thanks

Other thing. If I recall correctly (i'm not sure), the sndconfig uses oss drivers (not alsa) and
thus should not be used.

Thanx, i read your link, i'm gonna try it tomorow

Ok hum it will not work! The jp patch is for 2.4.21 only and I have 2.4.22 so I don't know if it will work or crash the system.
I havec a custom kernel but i didn't made it with kpkg (I used the old generci method) so I don't know if it will work... I tried as said as in this doc but i used make instead of kpkg; and it never worked. So...
Ok, i'm gonna try... and try... and try...
It worked on mandrake, so it MUST work on Debian. I just have to make it work...

I tried several installations... i get a kernel panic... and lilo died. So, now, my distrib is out and i have to reinstall it. Shit. I think i'll try oss...

Ok, I turned to OSS. Now, it works perfectly! It was so easy... cool! Now, I got a 100% functionnal Linux system. Just use it!
