Question ALSA and Modem troubles

Hello. I have an HP Pavilion zv5320us laptop with a SmartLink modem. I have successfully installed the slmodemd module and daemon and am able to connect to the Internet. However, in order to connect to the Internet I have to open up KMix and toggle a switch in the mixer called "Offhook" right before I connect with KPPP. If I don't do this, KPPP complains "NO DIAL TONE". Has anyone else experienced this problem? Is there a way to have the modem pick up the line automatically, rather than having to manually do it every time?

Thanks for any help!
