Alesis Multimix Firewire

Any musicians out there have any luck getting the MultiMix 8 firewire mixing board working ? under ffado.org all I see is this cryptic msg ...

Quote:
Wavefront DICE-II devices
* Used in Alesis MultiMix 8, 12, and 16 FireWire mixers.
* Jody McIntyre has hardware and documentation.
I have googled it and not found a workable solution. I would feel much more comfortable rocking out with penguin power.

Regards,

Hi, I don't know about that mixer, but have you checked the alsa forums and wiki.

It helped me immensely when setting up my edirol ua-25ex.

Good news, I think I've got it to work, Now as this is my first ever post to a forum i hope this goes OK, You never know it could be a good start. Here's what i did, very easy.

Ok I'm using Ubuntu Studio, not sure it makes a difference, haven't tried other versions as yet but this works in "studio"

1 disable your on-board sound card in the bios, this then should only leave you with your usb-sound device (the mixer)

2 under - system - preferences - sound change all sound capture and playback devices to USB Audio, WARNING check volume levels before running test buttons as it's a high pitch tone likely to do some ear damage...... (yes experience being passed on)

My system hung a little after doing this so i restarted and recorded and played back through Audacity no problem haven't tested any other software yet,

HOPE THIS HELPS
I have had a similar problem, and fix for my usb-audio device.

If you want you can give the on-board-sound a lesser index number to change the priority of the devices.
/etc/modprobe.conf and associated files in /etc/modprobe.d/ (with Mandriva-Linux)
Code:
....
#snd_usb_audio
remove snd_usb_audio /sbin/modprobe --first-time -r --ignore-remove snd_usb_audio
install snd_usb_audio /sbin/modprobe --first-time --ignore-install snd_usb_audio
options snd_usb_audio index=0 id=UA-25EX
#snd_hda_intel
remove snd_hda_intel /sbin/modprobe --first-time -r --ignore-remove snd_hda_intel
install snd_hda_intel /sbin/modprobe --first-time --ignore-install snd_hda_intel
options snd_hda_intel index=1 id=ALC-883
....
If you want to blacklist it you can also use index=-2 for the index number.

Also blacklisting the pc-speaker module has helped too.
Code:
PC speaker enabled by default

you can disable it completely by creating a file /etc/modprobe.d/disable-pcspkr.conf with the following line:

blacklist pcspkr
Hope this helps a fellow muso.

Cheers Glenn

GlennsPref,
I appreciate the response however my underlying problem is that I bought a firewire mixer. Hind sight is 20-20 I wish I went with the usb instead of shelling out the 400 bucks and being forced to have a windows machine running in my house = (
