1) Try
Code:
sudo dmesg|grep Mouse
and
Code:
grep mouse /var/log/Xorg.log.0
That will tell you if your mouse is still recognised by the kernel and by Xorg respectively.
2) Modern mice use evdev as their driver. Do you remember if your update included libevdev or xf86-input-evdev?
3) Any problems with the keyboard when using X? That uses evdev too.

Just to be thorough, I would test with a known-good mouse just to rule out the possibility of a coincidental hardware failure.

Is it a USB mouse? Did you try unplugging then replugging after booting? If an old PS/2 mouse, don't plug it in unless the PC is turned off.
