After messing up xorg.conf, touch-pad usb devices and cant connect to the internet.

Just as the subject says. Ive messed around with my xorg.conf trying to get compiz fusion to play nicely with video playback. I followed the instructions on http://forum.compiz-fusion.org/showthread.php?t=6794 .
I removed fglrx-driver and compiz-gnome and removed the xorg.conf from /etc/X11/xorg.conf . After running sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg . And whe X is restarted usb support is gone (will not recognize usb devices. (the light does not blink) and my wired nic is not detected. (eth0) Huge thank you goes to the person who can fix this I'm close to doing re-installation and loosing my data.

Solution

After digging around in the logs. I learned that no modules were loaded. So the fix was simple, in single user mode, as root run 'depmod' with no arguments and restart. Problem solved in about a day or so I'll post what command/s that I used to clear listed modules. I believe it might have been "X -configure" or "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg.

What caused it

After looking at the logs and recreating the conditions I found that running 'sudo aticonfig --initial' and restarting caused the problem if one runs 'sudo aticonfig --initial' and then 'sudo depmod' the problem is avoided. Somehow 'aticonfig --initial' removes the listed modules (I'm not sure why) while it configures the 'xorg.conf'. And depmod re-lists them.
