ADSL USB Modem

Hi folks! please can you help me?

I am a complete newbie to linux (just installed Mandrake 9.1 as a dual boot with XP) and am trying to set up my Ebuyer Conexant ADSL USB Modem. The manufacturer is Aceex, I think it may be called Conexant AccessRunner and the manufacturer code is AU11. Mandrake recognises the modem in the control panel as an ADSL USB Modem under Other Devices.

I have tried every search engine but am no further forward. All of the setups seem very complicated, even when I do try them I can only get so far then nothing.

Would it be possible for someone to give me a complete idiots guide to which files I need and the exact procedure to follow to install my modem.

I'm beginning to get really frustrated with XP and so want to move to somehting a little better but without my modem thers no point!

Cheers in advance for any help you can give me!

Better dual boot for now. Linux is not ready for USB ADSL modems yet. I have a Prolink Hurricane 8000. No luck so far with Linux! A few modems do work - but most do not. It is also a hassel to get it going.
Just wait until next year.

The USB Speedtouch modem is one which is supposed to work with Linux. RedHat has added support to it in their latest version...
Google and ye shall find....

go to sourceforge and download the following files:
speedtouch-1.2-beta1.tar.gz
speedtouchconf-07.03.2003.tar.gz
follow the instructions in the latter one to install the drivers automatically. Also use the 'doctor' in the doc directory to diagnose the connection.
i used pschram method first to learn how to do it and then this auto method.
one hint: you have to edit the script speedtouchconf so that it uses the 'beta' version of the driver. The line to change is on the first 20 lines of the script where it says ...=speedtouch....tar.gz
you have to change it to speedtouch-1.2-beta1.tar.gz
Also do not forget to put the management file into the right directory!
if you run the conf script again, it will attempt to correct any problems.
Extract everything into your root directory (/)
good luck
alfredo
