there is probably a way to get some "verbose" output, all I see there is that your ISP drop your connectio, it could be anything, from mistyped password to wrong drivers... I need more details.
Also, can you give more info about the modem? Which mark/company? USB or Ethernet? Exact version?

ADSL Modem

I received a combination modem from my supplier. It could be used in either USB or Ethernet Mode.

Had no problem getting windows to recognize the USB hookup.Linux was a far different matter!!!

When I purchased a $9.00 ethernet card (NIC 10/100mbs), my whole linux world changed dramatically.

Ubuntu, A Debian based distro automatically configured linux connection, ditto Mandrake, Red Hat, and Fedora Core.

If your friend can run that modem in ethernet,.he can install linux quickly.

I spent 2 days looking for a driver for the USB side of the modem, after the Ethernet Card was installed..it was an out of the box install

I can't find your modem on google, are you sure these infos are correct?
Do you have any clue if linux see your modem? These errors messages tell me it does but sometime it can be quite confusing
Sometime, ISP will accept to change your modem to an ethernet one if you tell them you dont have an USB port on your computer (dont tell them you run linux, most ISP will just refuse to help you if you tell them you run something else than Windoze)

Apparently the problem have a solution!!!
And the problem should be that in Portugal you have to connect trough PPPoE not PPPoATM.
Please read the following link http://balinhaweb.no.sapo.pt/HowToIceData500.txt that explains really well how to connect this adsl modem.

Good luck
