Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Question ADSL hardware

Hi all,

I guess this question falls somewhere between Hardware and Networking, so here goes....

I've read various threads talking about problems connecting to the Net using the Speedtouch USB modem in Linux, etc ....so the question I'd like to ask is - what is the best hardware to use for ADSL in Linux, if the speedtouch is so problematic?? For instance, what PCI cards/external hardware works?

I haven't got the knowledge (or to be honest, the time) to mess about too much trying to make it work! so is there anything out there that just works....? I can work inside my machine quite easily - its the software I have problems with!

Many thanks

D

Hello

I'm repeating myself ;-)...

I've been using the Alcatel Speedtouch for 18 months without any problem.

I've been using the userspace driver method with Mandrake, Red Hat, Debian, Gentoo and finally Slackware:
http://cvs.sourceforge.net/viewcvs....en.html?rev=1.3

There is another method, the kernel driver:
http://linux-usb.sourceforge.net/SpeedTouch/

The first method is more simple to apply, the second one is told to be more stable. Since I've never had problems with the first method however, I kept on using it.

Have a lot of fun

Koen

I agree. I like Linux and with the Speedtouch driver in the kernel the modem is well supported. There have been some problems with the new 2.6 kernel but that seems to be maturing nicely.
