OK, your location says england. If it's any help at all, I use ntl broadband and the modem they supply works straight out of the box. It was easier to set up in Linux than it was in Windows (as long as you have the right software and so on).
In general however, I think that most broadband modems will probably work since they don't generally use software drivers. If you can get one that connects to your pc via ethernet, then that will almost certainly work.
