Errrr..... 250 GB SATA ON CHANNEL 0

Most SATA drives are known as SCSI devices (sda, sdb, etc), try using fdisk and the /var/log/messages file for help;

/sbin/fdisk -l
(that is the lower case letter 'L' in the command)

Hi, i have a similiar problem by adding a plain SATA drive to my Linux (Debian etch) system.
Only line in /var/log/messages of scsi (or in my case sata) is:

Jun 16 17:31:22 spooky kernel: SCSI subsystem initialized

However, sata and scsi kernel modules are loaded:
spooky:~# lsmod | grep -e ata -e scsi
sata_nv 19012 0
libata 108756 1 sata_nv
scsi_mod 132236 2 sbp2,libata

There are no scsi devices created by udev under /dev/sda ...
So i have no chance to partition it. Do i need to reboot with special kernel args?

And what does your log files say for the SATA drive??

This: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...d.php?t=385867 suggests that you may be missing a needed driver: modprobe -v ata_piix

Try searching in the LinuxQuestions.org > Forums > Linux > Linux - Distributions > Debian forum for more help, maybe post a query???

Hi, i tried booting with a live cd (kubuntu) This OS detected the sata drive. It had an additional module sata_sil (which my current os did not had compiled.) I changed the kernel config and added this driver.

It works now. THANK YOU.
