Adding SCSI after installation

Hey,

I have just installed (2 weeks ago) RH 7.3 on my system, and I have more or less tweaked it to how I want it.

The problem is that now I need to add a SCSI controller (I think its an AHA 1542) and some SCSI disks to the system. For the time being, I don't want to boot into the disks, I just want to put them in an RAID array and do some tests with that.

How do I go about doing this? Do I just add the controller, and then run kudzu or what? I am just worried that RH installed a non SCSI kernel, and that now I will have to reinstall everuthing in order to get it to work properly.

If that did in fact happen, would I be better off reinstalling or recompiling the kernel? I have never done that before, but I guess there is a first time for everything.....

Let me know what you guys think,
Thanks!!

edit:: I was just reading the Customizing RH manual, and it says that any RAID partitions must be created during the installation. Is this true or would it be possible to configure RAID after installation, provided that I will not be booting from the array and that there is a IDE disk (bootable) already present in the system?

the RHL 7.3 kernel that you are using has the driver for AHA 1542. You can yank the card and then startup your machine. Kudzu should be able to detect it. Once the card is detected and installed, you can now create partitions on the new drive.

It is possible to do a RAID configuration after installation (though it's prette easy to do this during install). You can use fdisk to create the RAID partitions - check www.tldp.org for the RAID HOWTO.

I tried to do the Plug'n'Pray thing and it didn't work, to my great dismay...

I have to correct myself, the card I have is an AVA-1505 (it is an ISA card), however I did some snooping and the card is compatible with the AHA-152x, so it should work.

I plugged it in, and booted, kudzu didn't say anything about it, and I don't know what to do from here. I have never used anything SCSI in my life, much less in Linux, and now I am totally stuck.

On the RH site it says that the driver is included in the distribution, so why does kudzu not pick it up then?

I also searched google and came up with no instructions on how to install this thing. I am a little bit of a beginner, so I need some slightly more detailed instructions if I am to get this thing going.

I just did some more reading up, and I think that this card has no plug-and play capabilities at all. It has jumpers on the card which allow me to set the i/o and the irq, which I have set at default I/O and IRQ 10 (its the only free one).

What would be the next step for installing this card? How do I tell the system that it is there???

Adding an entry in /etc/modules.conf to load the module. Here are a couple sites that explain how to setup this card.

man if you were anywhere closer to me i would take you out for a drink now...I managed to get the thing to work, thanks to those two sites (and some more wrestling with that damn card0.

Just tell me how you found those two sites? I searched www.google.com/linux high and low, and they didn't come up. What engine/and what terms did you use?

Thanks a lot mate!
