add CONFIG_X86_CMPXCHG to kernel

Hello
I am trying to compile new intel drivers as my laptop a toshiba one doesn't handle well the stock one.
i have recompiled the kernel to add agppart as told in the howto in intellinuxgraphics site. but when I want to compile one it tells me that CONFIG_X86_CMPXCHG is not compiled into the kernel..
I have run make menuconfig several times but I don't seem to find what option enables this.
i could however try to edit the .config file by hand and just do it manually adding something like CONFIG_X86_CMPXCHG=y but I don't know if there are dependencies and could create a kernel panic issue.

thank you very much.

That option doesn't ring any bells right of the top of my head, but it looks like it would be somwehere in the very first few options inside menuconfig, in the area for like 'General Configuration', 'Processor Type' or 'Kernel Compatibility'. Consider using 'xconfig' rather than menuconfig, as it gives you a much more readable view of what's there. Click on each option's text, without actually selecting them, and read the name of the module created, watching for the one you need.

UPDATE:
Code:
# CONFIG_MGEODE_LX is not set
# CONFIG_MCYRIXIII is not set
# CONFIG_MVIAC3_2 is not set
# CONFIG_X86_GENERIC is not set
CONFIG_X86_CMPXCHG=y
CONFIG_X86_XADD=y
CONFIG_X86_L1_CACHE_SHIFT=7
Here it is under 'Processor Type and Features' in my 2.6.20 .config file.
