Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Adaptec SATA RAID: High Beep, contineous

Hi everyone,

I am trying to install Fedora Core 3 x86_64 on a node for the cluster at work. We have 9 identical computer: Dual Xeon 64-bit, 8GB ram, 1x120GB SATA HD, 4x200GB SATA HD's, Adaptec SATA PCI-X hardware raid cards. (the 120GB is supposed to house the installation files, where as the other 4 are supposed to be put into a raid0).

I hve Fedora Core 3 sucessfully installed on 7 out of the 9 nodes. On the other two nodes, I will get to the part of the installation where it asks if I want to automatically partition or maunally parition the harddrives. When I choose which I want (usually manual partitioning), the installation freezes (although I can still move the mouse) and the computer makes a high pitched continuous beep.

Is this indicative of a bad RAID card? Could it be bad hard-drives? What about setup? I am in the process of checking one of the disks, I've also tried to install it on three seperate hard disks in one of the non-working nodes, all three hard disks give the same error. (I did this one-by-one, only having that hard disk plugged in the others were unplugged).

To further complicated the issue. I have installation DVD's that came form the manufactorer of the computers. These detect the hard disks and let me partition the hard drive just find; however, the disks are all corrupt and will do not install the boot images for grub so I can't use them.

Any ideas anyone?

Hi Justin,

If you've set up 7 of the machines in the same way already, I'd doubt it was a configuration issue. More likely a disk failure, messing up the logical drive you're trying to install too.

If you simply unplugged the other drives to test a single disk, then I would expect you would have to reconfigure the RAID, otherwise the Logical RAID 0 is offline and the disks wouldn't be accessible.

Are there any SATA connections on the mobo - perhaps try an install on a single disk from one of those to make sure its the Adaptec card making that noise & locking up.

If not, you could try building a RAID 1 between just 2 of the drives, if one of the drives is faulty then the Logical drive will stay up and the adaptec card should simply report a degraded array(or beep) rather than falling flat on its face and giving that continous tone.

Hope I've made some sense, good luck man.

btw, unless you ABSOLUTELY must have maximum performance, I wouldn't touch RAID 0 with a barge pole. 4x200Gb disks would make a nice RAID 5 (maybe 3 disks plus a hot spare), and save you a nervous breakdown when 0.8 terabytes of data goes *pop*. I'm sure you're aware of that tho.

Have you found a solution for this yet? I am having a similar problem on a Dell server with an Adaptec AAR-2610 SATA RAID that I am trying install Fedora Core 3 on.
