Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Adaptec 1210SA under SuSE 9.2: Only one harddisk accessible

I am running SuSE 9.2 and I now installed an Adaptec 1210SA SATA Controller. I attached one SATA drive which I could easily access as /dev/sda under Linux.

I just added a second SATA drive to set up a RAID1 mirroring using Linux software raid. However, Linux only sees one drive /dev/sda (which gives the message "Disk /dev/sda doesn't contain a valid partition table" when invoking fdisk). The second drive cannot be seen. During boot, there are messages on the screen about the second drive /dev/sdb, the same as for /dev/sda. So the question is: Why can't I access the second drive? Both drives are OK and can be seen in the card's BIOS setup utility.
