ACPI stands for "Advanced Configuration and Power
Interface". It is the successor to APM "Advanced Power Management". The best site for learning about ACPI is probably:
http://www.acpi.info/

It will enable you to turn off monitors etc when not in use. Whether you want to use it is up to yourself. It can be more ecconomical and also save some harware in the event of power failures.
