acoustic management (Hard drive noise problem)

Hi
My hard drive makes much louder noise when an IO is in process in Debian lenny rather than windows xp. I did a search on google and i found out that the problem is that by default in Debian acoustic management is off. Now i now that i can switch it on with Hdparm but i wanna know that does this louder noise makes any harm to the hard drive or not?

IMHO no. AAM does reduce noise, lowers operating temperature and power requirements which should increase life expectancy. Of course the other effect is to lower performance.
