Acer H223HQ terminal image quality

I'm having issues with my Acer H223HQ screen.
It's nice 1920x1080 screen that I feed an analog VGA signal.

I prefer editing white text on a black background - much easier on my eyes. I cannot get the screen to display bright crisp characters across the entire screen. If they are good on one side, they are dim and dingy on the other side.

If I press the "Auto" button I might get good results. Bright and dim regions move back and forth across the screen. The text I'm trying to improve will shift from dim to bright and good, and back to dim again.

Attemting to manually adjust things with the menu just results in the bad areas moving to another place.

When I switch the KVM to the other computer I have to re-adjust the screen again. Bummer.

I need to be able to fix the brightness and contrast uniformly across the entire screen and lock it in.

One more gripe: The users manual is useless regarding using the on-screen display. It only has screen shots with no explanation of what the menu items are for. Many are self-explanatory, but too many are not.
