Acer 5750G and Debian Squeeze

Hello!

I've just bought an Acer 5750G (specs in spanish) with Windows 7 and I'd like to install Debian Squeeze (which I've been using in my desktop computer for a long time).

My first problem (I think that I'll find further problems, for example with NVidia graphics) is that I can't connect through wireless.

The name in lspci is "Broadcom 4358", and I tried installing b43 and broadcom-wl but didn't work. Probably I failed on doing something, but I don't think so.

Thank you in advance!

I don't think the b43 or wl drivers support your chip yet maybe.

Quote:
All other Broadcom chipsets not listed above are not supported

http://wiki.debian.org/wl/#Supported_Devices

You might want to look through

http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/

and maybe in next post, post output of

Code:
lspci | grep -i wireless
because it will be hard to give advice with out exact wireless chip info.

In this list, 14e4:4358 is marked as "not tested" with b43 and "alternative" wl. I tried both and none of them worked. I see the other lists and in any of them is shown 4358. So, is there any solution possible? Or I'll have to wait for a new driver?

Thanks

I'll clean both installs and revise blacklist and /etc/modules but, what driver should I install b43 or wl?

Thank you very much!

Not sure man. Shooting in the dark for me when it comes to broadcom. Broadcom is tricky in Linux and I don;t use their chips because of that.

Maybe the Arch wiki can help determine which driver is better.

Like they say for the BCM4359 chip. To use the

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php...mac.2Fbrcmfmac

which is neither b43 or wl. Broadcom is freaking complicated.

Then again

BCM 43227 is what shows on their id chart. So I GUESS the driver for BCM 43227 should be the one (b43)

I deleted everything from broadcom-wl, and reinstalled b43 (with help of debian wiki). I revised blacklist (/etc/modprobe.d) for b43 and there was nothing. I typed iwconfig and no wireless extensions. I typed modprobe b43 and iwconfig again, no wireless extensions. So, I typed dmesg and this is the result:

Code:
[ 1039.771043] cfg80211: Using static regulatory domain info
[ 1039.771045] cfg80211: Regulatory domain: US

[ 1039.771059] (5230000 KHz - 5330000 KHz @ 40000 KHz), (600 mBi, 2300 mBm)
[ 1039.771062] (5735000 KHz - 5835000 KHz @ 40000 KHz), (600 mBi, 3000 mBm)

[ 1039.789122] Broadcom 43xx driver loaded [ Features: PMLS, Firmware-ID: FW13 ]
With "regulatory domain", I don't understant what is saying, but mine is not US, is ES (Spain). Apart from this, it shows that the driver is loaded, but I can't see anywhere my chipset

EDIT: Probably is necessary to say that I'm in a debian amd64, because I have an Intel Core i5 64 bits

Thank you very much!

On a off chance. Have you

Now that you have the driver and firmware loaded. I just got back from Motor Cycle Rally since my last post so I am a bit out of it right now.

You also have not mentioned what Desktop you are running and what you are using as a network manager to connect in Debian also.

Yes, the user is in the netdev group, and I am using "Debian by default" . So I think is gnome and I don't know which network manager I'm using.

I've tried a Live CD of Xubuntu (I hate the new design of Ubuntu) and it automatically asks for enable a non-free driver (which name is not in Debian packages), so I'll probably install Xubuntu, and install Debian whenever I buy a new laptop (then, I'll revise all the components and its compatibility with Debian)

Thank you very much
