Access To Encrypted SSD Partition With Native Password in SSD>SATA Enclosure
1 Attachment(s)
Hello.
i recently suffered a motherboard failure with my 3rd generation Carbon X1 ultrabook. after concluding that replacing an integrated motherboard was beyond my kung fu, (found no how-to vids on youtube) i set about the task of trying to recover my data from the dual boot mini SSD. to make a long story short, i managed to salvage everything from the windows side of the equation but since i elected to encrypt the linux side, so far i have been unable to access any of the data there. i can see the entire file structure and navigate most of it but obviously, the /Home folder is off limits. is merely knowing the password enough to gain access via some esoteric bash string or is it more involved, or am i just going to have to buy another freaking X1...? any help greatly appreciated. c. |
It pays to understand what you are using. Makes recovery possible/easier.
ecryptfs is not used to encrypt a partition, but merely a directory. Have a read of this to get your data mounted. Backups might be a good idea too. |
Is this how you encrypted it? https://wiki.debian.org/TransparentE...nForHomeFolder

@jefro:
hello, thanks for responding. i vaguely recall opting for an encrypted fs during the installation. it is not something i would have done outside of that context.

@syg00
hey, thanks for providing a clue for the clueless here. i guess i should have realized the whole partition wasn.t encrypted when i was able to navigate most of it. duh. anyway, thanks again for the help.

You can't be vague about trying to access it. :)
