AC97 sound card -- mp3 plays too fast -- chipmunk effect

I have an AC97 on-board sound card and in Linux (Debian sarge) I run mp3blaster and it plays them too fast and mpg123 doesnt play them at all giving an error about OSS.

I googled about this and I found out it is because AC97 has only an output of 48000 Hz so it plays the 44100 Hz mp3's faster than usual.

I saw several suggestions to fix the problem and they vary from upgrading alsa to buying a new sound card.

I dont think that I even have alsa. 'lsmod' shows me module names like i810*.

How to fix this problem?
Thanks.

Since I'm a Linux newbie, I don't know if this is any help but you could try to get it resampled via software to 48000 Hz. At least in Suse, I can set a custom sampling rate from the control panel.

Thanks tumbelo. I was actually trying to figure out how to use 'sox' together with 'mp3blaster' to get a workaround like you say, but today I tried installing 'alsa' drivers and that solved the problem. Thanks.
