Question AC97 Audio not working with Redhat 8


I am using Redhat Linux 8. I have following error to play sound.
---------
Error while initializing the sound driver
device /dev/dsp can't be opened (no such device)
The sound server will continue using the null output device

Hardware is:
VIA Technologies
Model VT8233 AC97 Audio

I am new user of Linux. Please help me.

i had the same probelm with rh8. I even changed my soundcard to soundblaster live and it still wouldn't work, even changing mods and permissions. Boo redhat. Go with mandrake or gentoo.

oki download asla 0.9 something

install

cd /alsa.0.9XXXXX/util/ run alsaconf and have fun )

i did the same, got the card working, but my CD-ROM does not play CDs correctly. alsa didn't fix that issue...the CD works fine in XP however...

Cool here is partial solution

If I were you, I would install the new kernel 2.4.20-x (which happens to be of RH9). Of course, you have to upgrade couple of rpm packages like SysVinit, pam, vixie-cron, ...
In fact, you could upgrade completely or just install the new kernel. Whichever you want. However, you might stump into the problem of only being able to play mp3 files, but not CDs which is another problem I am having right now. I believe it has something to do with CDs input disabled. Not sure. If you dare to try out... ; otherwise, search for more answer before trying it...
