Bongiorno B7.
An indication of what distro you are using
might be helpful in providing you with the
required information :}
Basically, you'll want to try to load a module
called ac97
Cheers,
Tink

I am also running the AC'97 chipset, and unfortunatly, I cannot get my sound to work. I have no idea how to use Linux at all, not in the slightest bit. My question is, how do I install/obtain a new driver? I need step by step instruction as I am a complete Linux Moron. Thanks for anyhelp.
I am running RedHat 8.0 by the way.

As a basic introduction let's say that drivers in Linux
are part of the Linux kernel's source tree, and you have
the choice to either build a monolithic kernel that matches
your system with all drivers compiled in, or a modular kernel
that will load appropriate drivers during boot or on demand.
That said, go to The Linux Documentation Project's homepage and read the Linux-Kernel-HOWTO.
Cheers,
Tink

I'm using Slackware 8.0 and have VIA AC'97 chipset for sound also and I never got it to work using the standard linux drives.
So I had to download and install the Alsa Sound drivers and now it works!
Give it a try and see what happens.

Bitta, I have the alsa drivers installed, and RedHat 8.0, but it isn't seeing the driver, even though alsamixer is, and working properly.
Any ideas?

Are you aware of the fact that you're about 20 months
late with that response?
