Could any of you running on Gateway 7510GX with SuSE10 for AMD64 send me the DMESG output after booting?

I have been having problems with stability -- every so often I get a kernel oops --, and I would like to check ACPI/APIC usage on a known-to-be-working system against mine.

TIA,

Here you go. FWIW, I must leave ACPI enabled, and I have not been able to get suspend to ram or suspend to disk to work.

Bootdata ok (command line is root=/dev/hda6 vga=0x317 selinux=0 resume=/dev/hda5 splash=silent)

This is a bit of a bump... but I've been looking for other 7510GX linux users as well.

Anyone have info on 32-bit drivers for the x600? That's the last bit of hardware I need to get working... it'd be nice if I could.

Thanks for any info in advance.

BTW, the wireless tutorial worked for 32-bit as well. I had to install some additional packages like my kernel source and the build-essentials package (I'm on Kubuntu 5.10) but it did the trick. I had to have spent 10 hours trying too get that working. Sheesh. It's no wonder windows folk are intimidated by the concept of moving to linux. But in the long run it's worth it.

I use the drivers from ATI. I had to install them and then mess with xorg.conf to get everything working, but it wasn't too hard. IIRC there are helpful posts out there as well, should you run into any snags.

Thanks for replying. I actually got the ATI drivers installed... though there seems to be a conflict with my ALSA audio drivers. I installed and tried to play America's Army (native) but I had no sound and the gameplay was poor. It was downright terrible. I'll try updating my ALSA to see if that helps.

has anyone found alternative drivers for audio? I could give that a shot too.

What is your distro? It just hit me that all of us on this thread are using suse. Suse 10 should autodetect the sound card and install the correct driver. My system is configured to use the snd-atiixp alsa module. I experimented with hardwawre detection on several distros and really wish I had kept better records of my experience. It seems like the only distro that gave me significant trouble, esp related to sound, was debian.

For video, the ATI menu should ask you to select a distro. I think I had trouble with the distro-specific selection and had to take the generic (at the top) installation. At the end of installation, the program tells you to run fglrxconfig, which generates a new xorg.conf.

I first backed up my existing xorg.conf. Then I ran fglrxconfig to generate a new one. Then I exited X and restarted, only to find that the installation program had badly mangled my xorg.conf that I couldn't bring up a graphical interface. I looked at the X error, opened xorg.conf in vim, and tried to fix the error. I think I did this about a dozen times, tweaking the file until I fixed one error, only to find another one waiting for my attention.

Eventually I backed up ati's xorg.conf and replaced it with the the previous one. I then brought up X, opened both xorg.conf files, and went line by line to see how ati's version differed from mine. I think I then started with a working xorg.conf and replaced it section-by-section with the ati version until I isolated the problems.

If memory serves, there were two categories of error in the xorg.conf file that ati created. First, the "Section" entries require "Identifier" entries, and the value of the "Identifier" entry is used to refer to the section in other places. The values were consistently a generic name with a digit appended, e.g., Mouse0, Mouse1, Keyboard0. The problem, I think, is that ati replaced some of the Sections, used a different Identifier enumeration system, and did not replace the references elsewhere in the file. For example, ati might have given a Screen section the identifier "Screen[0]", but it was being referenced as "Screen0" elsewhere in the file. So I had to fix the references.

The second problem I encountered was with a ServerLayout section. My previous xorg.conf file had one of these, and the one that ati generated did not. I copied the one from my old file and that did the trick.

For full disclosure, I know absolutely nothing about X or xorg.conf; when I say that ati's xorg.conf contained errors, I only mean errors relative to the file that was working previously. It might be that I selected the wrong things in fglrxconfig or that my system is different from what ati's configuration utility was expecting.

Hopefully my scattered memories will push you in the right direction...

conexant AC-Link audio

Not sure if this is the right place to post this, but I thought I would give it a shot. My wife somehow deleted her audio device from her Gateway laptop, and I was wondering how I find this to reinstall it? I have the same laptop, is it possible to copy it off of my computer and put it onto hers? Please help!

If not, I'm going to try another distro. I'm waiting until mandriva releases their 2006 images. If that works, I'll go with them. I'll check out Fedora too...

How did you get the Fn+F2 to turn on your wireless card. I have tried Suse 10, Fedora 5 & 6, and even after installing the drivers with ndiswrapper I still cannot get the hot keys to work. I also have a Gateway 7322GZ.

Either re-install it with the recovery media your laptop came with, or go to Gateway.com and go to their support page, they have the latest drivers there and you can download them very easy.

Stability on the 7510gx.

Has anyone experienced stability issues on the 7510gx? Mine would often freeze? Essentially is could run for a day or two and then freeze afterwards, for no obvious reasons. I switched from SUSE 10.1 to MEPIS 6.5 in the hope that the problem will go away, but it hasn't.

I think it might have something to do with the x600 mobility graphics card. I have tried running MEPIS using the vesa drivers and was able to get suspend to disk to work, but I couldn't do that when I am using ATI's or Radeon drivers.

[QUOTE=mikeh2;1925733]This is great to find other 7510gx-ers out there.
For sound under Suse 10-64, have you tried muting the "External Amp" line? Although I never got sound working under Suse 10, I initially had similar problems when I switched to FC4, and muting that line seemed to fix them (in particular, it seems like muting the line through Gnome's volume control utililty worked, but muting it through the similar KDE tool, or alsamixer didn't? I know that sounds confusing and probably just wrong, but that is my recollection). I never got a chance to try it under Suse 10.

I can confirm the external amp to be an issue with 64-bit fedora 11 kernel updates. You need to go into the advanced volume control, turn on the external amplifier switch from perferences, and then uncheck the item. This assumes that you have already successfully installed and have been using the ATI IXP driver.
