about wireless router for home application

Hi all,

I'm prepared to set up a 2nd network using wireless router, to be connected to a wire modem which is supplied by ISP, There is already a wire router connected to the said modem, also supplied by ISP.

Internet connection
4MB/4MB DSL, up and down
Static IP

One PC is located at about 2 feet from the wireless router, the former on table top and latter under table. Another PC is in next room just round the corner at about 10 feet in distance and separated by concrete wall. All PCs are running Linux.

My preliminary selection is as follows:

D-Link DIR-652 GIGA Wireless-N Router HK$ 599

Wireless N Gigabit Home Router
http://www.dlink.com/uk/en/home-solu...it-home-router

USB Client for PC
D-Link DWA-130 Wireless-N USB Stick HK$ 180 選取
Wireless N USB Adapter
DWA-130
http://www.dlink.com/ca/en/home-solu...-n-usb-adapter

This is my first time to go wireless on network. Please shed me some light. Other recommendation is also appreciated.

(remark: no preset budget. Router and client for home use preferrable)

TIA

So what sort of PCs are they? Laptop, Desktop? The 2ft model I'd connect by wire. Most wireless routers have four RJ45 socket connections and, for me, wired is more secure. I'd be tempted to use cable with the 10ft model as well but then I cabled quite a lot of my house up so 10ft isn't a lot. The wireless I'd just use for mobile kit; netbooks, laptop, tablet, ipod touch, smart phone sort of stuff.

I recently upgraded to a Virgin Superhub running up to 60Mbs. For some of my older wireless kit I've had to choke the wireless back to 54Mbs though. (It's capable of 145 and 300Mbs but if the Internet connection is lower, what's the point apart from range which I don't need.)

Hi,

I think I would go back to wire because all PCs here are desktop. To go wireless is solely my curiosity because I never used it before. For IPhone I have 3G and I can get files from server via UbuntuOne. Before I have thought of navigating server on IPhone via wireless. Later I thought it only wasting cost and time. Then I dropped this idea.

Anyway thanks for your advice.

is distance the reason why you are extending the wireless?

if so, why not try ethernet over power line hardware?

but concrete wall 10 feet....do you own the house?

drill a hole and feed a ethernet cable thru it....no need for second device.....assumes second computer has ethernet and you know to set unique ips for internet computer and your slave.

Well, if your reasons are purely curiosity... The only outlay would be the wireless router. You'd actually save money on the 3G connection if you used the wireless router for data while at home. (Probably not a lot!) I'd still leave the Desktops wired but any future wireless gizmos you bought could be connected easily plus it would give you experience of playing with wireless internet. Sorted!

Hi folks,

Thanks for your advice.

Now I drop the idea of going wireless and come back to wire connection.
